Stocking Your Wine Cellar

Your wine cellar should be thought of as a resource for your future enjoyment. The thought put into stocking your cellar will determine the dividends of enjoyment you will receive.

Determining the size of your wine supply will dictate the best method of constructing a cellar to store your wines. If you want 100 to 500 bottles on-hand, you should seriously consider buying an upright unit, such as a Vintage Keeper, but if you would like more than that, a climate-controlled room is likely the best option to preserve your wine safely .

Calculating the amount of wine you consume annually will give you an idea of the quantity you should have in your cellar. An ideal cellar, once built up, will contain enough wine for the next ten years, about half for consumption in the next five years, and half beyond that. From this point, stocking need not equal more than replenishment of your consumption. However, you can now focus on enhancing the quality of your cellar by adding higher-valued wines upon release (when least expensive), for consumption much later as the wines mature.

Most red wines, and some categories of whites, improve with age. Generally, the more tannins in a red wine and the more acidity in a white wine, the longer the aging potential. An important aspect of your stocking plan is to determine the ageing potential of each wine you buy. Purchasing by the case is ideal, as this will allow you to sample the wine as it improves. If you have only one bottle and it ages to a superb wine, you will not be able to re-experience it.

How to plan your cellar and what to stock in it are not simple exercises, and require a number of considerations. You must look at your lifestyle, what types of foods you relish and most often eat, and the extent to which you entertain.

Fortunately, we at The Cellar can greatly assist in this process. To arrange a personal consultation please call 503-0730 or email info@cellarwinestore.com. --D.N.
