Wine for Your Wedding

Okay, you’ve picked the person, you’ve picked the date, and you’ve picked the location. The big decisions have been made, and it’s time to start making the hundreds of choices that will help make the day perfect. If you let the myriad of selections get to you, it can be like being pecked to death by ducks, but we at The Cellar are here to save you from such a gruesome demise, at least on the wine side of things.

There are a number of events around, and including, the wedding, which will be all the more special for having the right wine at the right time. These choices need not be complicated, and this little essay might be all you need to make your selections.

First of all, it is probably a good idea to have both a red and a white wine from which to choose whenever you’re hosting an event. Not everyone likes one or the other, and the point of being a host is to make everyone as happy as possible (which will do much to lower your own stress levels, too, so let’s not forget a healthy dose of self-interest).

Since you are aiming to please the greatest number of people with the least amount of effort, this is not the time to get experimental. Look at the food you will be serving, and find a couple of good wines that will fit the bill. Again, the safest way to go is to aim for a safe, middle ground.

Here are a few concrete examples to help you with your decisions:

With barbequed or spicy chicken, it would pair best with a strong chardonnay from California or Australia, and a good red would be an Aussie shiraz or a Chilean carmenere.

If you are serving milder chicken dishes, for example baked or with a cream sauce, consider matching it with a fruity sauvignon blanc or riesling, and a good red would be a pinot noir or a light chianti.

On the red meat side of the equation, if you want like your meat with strong or spicy flavours, you should consider pairing it with equally strong whites and reds. A good white would be a full-bodied chardonnay or dry gewürztraminer, and a good red would be a South American malbec or French chateauneuf-du-pape.

If your beef is baked to appeal to less robust palates, there are still excellent options available. Good whites would include a semillion/sauv blanc blend or Italian soave, and matching reds would be a cabernet sauvignon or merlot (or a blend of the two, which is always tasty ...).

And last, but not least, let’s not forget that a wedding is cause for much celebration, and no celebration is complete without a bit of bubbly to top it off. Sparkling wine and champagne go well with just about any meal, and we even have it in white, rosé, or red to match whatever you may desire.

These are just five examples of meals you might serve, but are a good starting point for planning meals and the wines to match, and all of the suggested wines come in a wide range of prices, with most of them being surprisingly affordable.
