Verdicchio

Without carrying out a thorough study on the different theories about the origins of this noble wine, it results that the Verdicchio wine has been always playing an important role, especially, as far as landscape, culture and the Marches's economy are concerned. The Verdicchio cultivation and production has been particularly determining for that area known as " Castelli di Jesi" ( Jesi Castles).

The Marches

The Marches are situated just in the centre of Italy, between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. Although the Marches are not a large region (less than 10.000 Km2 roughly), visitors can admire an outstanding range of landscapes: from the sea to the hills, from the valleys crossed by several rivers to the tops of the highest mountains. Thanks to this variety, this region differs considerably from all the other Italian regions.

During the years, hilly e mountain-hinterland, together with a few areas situated along the 160 kilometres of coasts ,has not been severely damaged; indeed, men have limited their intervention, keeping the nature uninjured. Large areas have been safeguarded and two national parks, among the most beautiful parks in Italy, have been created (The Sibillini's Park and the Park of the Laga's Mountains).

The Marches boast more than 200 museums, picture galleries and art collections, whose works of art and historical finds are some of the greatest works of Italy and of the world.

During the year, there are several folk festivals and historical parades, which take place; besides being real attactrions for the tourists, they have been also playing a fundamental role for the tradition.

The Jesi Castles : country of the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi d.o.c. Classico, this area represents one of the most beautiful landscapes and, from an oenological point of view, one of the most important soils.

This area is situated in the hinterland of Ancona, midway between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennines; it presents a wide succession of medieval and Renaissance villages, whose aspect has not changed during the years. Gentle hills, all covered with Verdicchio vineyards, represent the common element of these villages.

There, the way of living has still human proportions and, along the Verdicchio's ways, you can taste one of the most valuable wines of the world. The production of this wine is limited and is the result of fine artisan's skills and of the work of those companies , which have preferred quality, as a major trait.

Since ancient times, the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi has safeguarded a particular history and a special trait, becoming one of the most famous white wines of the world.

"De solar claritade et virtù eccellentissime", used to say a good monk about this extraordinary wine. Furthermore, according to the legend, when Alarico passed the area of the Jesi Castles on his way back to Rome, he "seco portasse quaranta some in barili nulla a sè stimando recar sanitade et bellico vigor melio" of that wine (he carried with him forty packs in barrels of that wine, because according to him nothing was better then Verdicchio for good health and strength).

It's a very clear and intense wine, of a pale yellow with greenish tones, with a rich and delicate bouquet, full-bodied and savoury, with the typical slightly bitterish aftertaste.
